Wrap Yourself in a Tag Aloha Pareo

One of my favorite travel clothing items is the pareo, or sarong. It packs small and is a multitasker after my own heart, used as a coverup, skirt, shirt, dress, towel, picnic blanket, tablecloth, packing cube, and more. I’ve always got one in my bag.

Some of the pareos I love most are those made by Kailua-based Tag Aloha Co., because they’re soft, breathable, and quick to dry. The pareo designs pay homage to Hawaiian flowers and plants, as well as shellfish and a Hawaiian plaid called palaka. Collabs with companies like Hawaiian Airlines and Common Ground (a Kauaʻi organization that’s building a regenerative community around food) further honor the Hawaiian Islands.

The pareos are made from 100% soft-spun rayon, and measure 67 inches by 43 inches. They’re easy to handwash in the hotel sink. To dry, just hang them in the bathroom or outside, where the breeze will dry them quickly.

The company’s aim is to create meaningful stories and designs that resonate with people and honor the spirit of aloha. When travelers look for souvenirs of a place, the most special are those created by local businesses that embody the local culture. I’m a fan of Tag Aloha Co., because the company believes in and sources Fair Trade materials in their own products. They’re also a supporter of the Surfrider Foundation (dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves, and beaches) and AccesSurf (which empowers people with disabilities through accessible beach and water programs).

Tag Aloha Pareos list for $46 each on the brand’s site, and come in a wide variety of designs and colors. Mine (pictured) is the ʻOpihi Pareo in navy, with a layered pattern of ʻopihi shells. One of the newest designs celebrates delicious POG juice and Hawaiian Airlines.
