Why Charlevoix Is A 2026-Must Visit

By now, everyone knows travelers are scoping out the lesser-known more often than not.

The virtually unknown town of Charlevoix, a locally loved hideaway north of Traverse City, the most notable neighbor in close distance, is a true delight to visit.

Not only is there supreme beauty from its gleaming blue waves and well-kept beaches come spring and summer, but there’s also an array of attractions overlooked by Traverse City and Mackinac Island nearby.

Charlevoix sits in that sweet spot as either a day trip add-on from either one or as a new spot to make your base for a flawless weekend getaway, which is our vote, given Midwest Living’s insightful guide on the ins and outs of this storybook harbor town.

You’ll find a dreamy, laid-back atmosphere chock-full of things to do, whether it’s absolutely nothing, kickin’ back lakeside, or venturing out to see the sites, which is more than you might imagine for a town of less than 3,000 residents.

Castle Farms lets visitors freely explore colorful gardens and stone courtyards, with optional guided tours offering a peek inside its historic halls and multiple museums.

Admission is as low as $10 for self-guided tours, which can be booked online. Children can enter free of charge.

Spring through fall is said to be the best time to visit for elevated photos from vibrant floral blooms to foliage-filled pathways.
